also normalerweise installiert er die aktuellste Version, die mit deinen Quellen/sourcen möglich ist.
Bei sid ist das gnome2.4
wenn Du apt-cache search IRGENDWAS machst listet er dir alle Pakete auf, die irgendwas mit IRGENWAS zu tun haben und die kannst du dann per apt-get install PAKTET1 PAKET2 ... installieren.
wenn Du apt-cache show PAKETNAME machst zeigt er die Informationen über das Paket an (er zeigt Dir zwei Versionen an, wenn in deinen Sourcen zB.: gnome2.2 und 2.4 drin sind - installiert wird aber dann 2.4 - es sei den du gibst es anderst an zb.: gnome-core/stable)
also ein apt-cache show gnome-core zeigt bei mir folgendes:
