    Unhappy Trotz FAQ und README: NVIDIA-Frust

    Mein System:

    Redhat9 mit Kernel 2.4.20-20.9
    Geforce3 ti500

    Vorgehensweise bei der installation des NVIDIA-Treibers:

    1.) www.nvidia.com besucht und treiber downgeloadet: NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-4496-pkg2.run
    2.) Download der Kernel Sourcen : kernel-source-2.4.20-20.9.i386.rpm
    3.) Installation der Kernelsourcen mit rpm -i kernel-sou.....
    -> Verzeichnis "linux-2.4.20-20.9" in /usr/scr
    -> Verknüpfung auf "linux-2.4.20-20.9" erstellt per ln -s linux-2.4.20-20.9 linux (ka ob unbedingt notwendig)
    4.) Wechsel zu init 3 mit /sbin/init 3
    5.) Einloggen als root
    6.) Aufruf von NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-4496-pkg2.run mit sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-4496-pkg2.run
    7.) Programm startet und kompiliert den Treiber entsprechend den Kernelsourcen
    8.) Installation erfolgreich abgeschlossen
    9.) Modifikation der XF86Config gemäß README (Load "glx" dazu, und Load "dri" Load "GLcore" entf. / "nv" durch "nvidia" ersetzen)


    --> reboot --> XServer startet nicht - Fehler "Failed to initialize NVIDIA kernel module"

    Soweit mein vorgehen. Irgendwas muß ich falschmachen :/

    hellas,

    hast du auch das nvidia module geladen =?=
    editiere hierzu die datei: /etc/modules.autoload.d/kernel-2.x (x steht fuer dienen kernel, also meist kernel-2.4)
    schreibe das hier rein:
    # For example:
    # 3c59x
    nvidia

    das mit # davor sind nur beispiele. weiss nich ob die ueberall dabei sind. jedenfalls ganz unten in dieser datei musst du das obige dazumachen. er ladet somit das nvidia modul.


    hoffe es hat geholfen.

    Was passiert denn, wenn du als "root" eingeloggt modprobe nvidia eingibst? Was steht danach und nach dem Startversuch von X im Syslog (/var/log/messages)?

    Das ist das Log vom Startversuch des Xservers. RedHat habe ich nicht mehr drauf. Dieser Versuch fand unter Suse Linux 8.2 statt. Die Installation erfolgte so wie in der Readme.

    Hallo Arka!
    Eine Frage hast Du ein komplettes update von Suse 8.2 gemacht und auch einen neuen Kernel installiert.
    Beim Online Update von 8.2 wird ein neuer Kernel installiert. Den darfst Du aber in Verbindung mit den Nvidia Treiber den neuen nicht installieren.
    Es gibt nur zwei Möglichkeiten.
    Neuinstallation.
    Komplett-update außer den Kernel.
    Danach den Nvidia-Treiber installieren.
    Mit Sax konfigurieren und fertig.
    Beim installieren des neuen Kernels wird man übrigens auch gewarnt.
    Hast Du wahrscheinlich ignoriert.
    Sollte der neue Kernel installiert worden sein, dann gibt es noch von Nvidia ein Kernelpaket, welches für diesen Fall vorgesehen ist.

    Eine weitere Möglichkeit
    Gib mal switch2nvidia -glx in der Konsole als root ein.
    Vorher den x-Server mit init 3 anhalten.
    Dann nochmal Sax2 aufrufen.

    Was ich gemacht habe:

    Suse 8.2 auf eine blanke Partition installiert.
    Online update gemacht -> Kernel 2.4.20-4GB-athlon

    Dann erst NVIDIA Treiber installiert nach den Anweisungen aus der Readme:

    SuSE Linux 8.2 with update kernel or self-compiled kernel
    -------------------------------------------------------------

    1) Kernel sources must be installed and configured. Usually this means
    installing the 'kernel-source' package with YaST2, update it - if not
    already done - via YaST2 Online Update (YOU) and configure it then
    with the following commands:

    cd /usr/src/linux
    make cloneconfig && make dep

    2) Use the nvidia installer.

    export IGNORE_CC_MISMATCH=yes
    sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-4496-pkg2.run

    3) Enable 3D support with SaX2.

    Da scheint mir aber der Fehler zu sein.
    Wenn Du den Athlon kernel installiert hast dann den nvidia Treiber, wirst Du wohl Probleme bekommen.
    Dann fehlt dir noch ein Kernel_Paket von Nvidia das für den neuen Athlon Kernel bestimmt ist.
    Also von Nvidia ein Kernel Patch sozusagen.

    Oder Du installierst den Athlon-Kernel einfach gar nicht und installierst den Nvidia-Treiber von dem Yast Online Update.

    Beim installationsscipt von NVIDIA kompiliert er sich ein eigenes Kernelmodul anhand
    der KernelSourcen. Er hat also kein vorgefertigtes, aber kann eins kompilieren.

    also nochmal.
    Der Nvidia Treiber vom Online update ist neu aber für den alten Athlon kernel.
    Der findet auch wenn Du durchkompelierst nicht die passenden kernel sourcen.
    Der neue Treiber ist für den alten Athlon kernel der bei Suse auf der Cd ist geschaffen worden.
    Damit er mit dem neuen Suse Kernel(Athlon-kernel) läuft muß du einen Kernel-Patch von nvidia herunterladen.
    Dann hast Du neuen Athlon kernel ----patch für Athlon kernel- und nvidia installer.
    Oder Du installierst den neuen Athlon kernel für Suse nicht und ruftst den nvidia installer einfach nach Online update auf.
    Online update heißt ja nicht unbedingt, das man sich alles saugen muß

    Von dem NVIDIA update für Athlon wußte ich noch nichts !
    Wo genau bekomme ich denn dieses update ? (auf den Seiten von nvidia [www.nvidia.com] bin ich nicht fuendig geworden)

    Also bei mir war das folgendermaßen.
    Ich hatte nach einem kompletten Online Update von Suse den installer mit
    sh nvidiaxxxxxxxxxxx.run aufgerufen.
    Der hat dann als meldung herausgegeben das er bestimmte Quellen nicht findet.
    Die wollte er sogleich von nvidia automatisch herunterziehen.
    Da ich keine Verbindung hatte und auch keine Lust hatte auf der Console mal eben eine Verbindung herzustellen, habe ich ihn erstmal nicht installiert.
    Ich habe mich dafür entschieden den Suse Kernel nicht upzudaten.
    Das heißt, da ich vorher alles neu upgedatet hatte mußte ich meine gesamte Suse installation neu machen, danach ein Online update von Suse--------pakete manuell auswählen nicht automatisch. Nach dem laden der Pakete einfach auf akzeptieren und wenn der Kernel installiert werden soll, wird gefragt installieren oder Patch überspringen. Einfach auf überspringen gehen und der Suse-Kernel wird nicht upgedatet.
    Bei dir heißt der wahrscheinlich Athlon kernel , ich habe einen der auf Pentium aufsetzt und der heißt kdelft-Standard-kernel oder so ähnlich.
    Auf jeden Fall wenn diese Sicherheitsabfrage kommt einfach auf Patch überspringen gehen.
    So jetzt hast Du einen neuen Nvidia-Treiber auf jeden Fall. Den installierst Du mit diesen installer.run und dann noch auf Sax2 konfigurieren und fertig ist die Kiste.
    Denke daran die 3 D Beschleunigung zu aktivieren.
    Noch etwas .
    Mit 3Ddiag bekommst Du angezeigt was für einen Treiber Du installiert hast und ob die 3D-Unterstützung aktiviert ist.
    Ich würde den neuen Kernel von Suse auch nicht installieren, den Nvidia gibt für diesen Kernel keine Garantie. Ist noch im experimentellen Stadium.
