Hotlinking and "linked by a bandwidth thief"
Internet is full of bandits. And some of them tries to steal bandwidth. How is that possible? Well.. The bandit does a mame page, with banners and everything, but the actual ROM files he offers, aren't served from his own server (he knows that he hasn't the bandwidth for it, and he doesn't want to spend a lot of time to keep the files updated), he just links directly to the files at someone else. This is called "hotlinking"
To prevent people from stealing the bandwidth from [mame.dk] we developed a way that every download link from [mame.dk] is a new one each time, and cannot be reused.
Example download URLS for Mortal Kombat: http://roms2.mame.dk/db144287b5d55f57a42327a190965e19/993149213/cur/mk.zip http://roms2.mame.dk/d509714da091ad970284b23ad6b66648/993149235/cur/mk.zip
These two different links, serve the same file!
If someone reuse an old link, they will get the message "You were linked by a bandwidth thief".
When we implemented this first, we got like a gazillion complaints from getright users, that they were no longer able to do resuming download, so we altered the script, and allowed the link to live for one hour. So now the download managers were allowed to resume the download within one hour.
But we still get daily mails about people not able to resume downloads. We also observed that people used download managers to sort of "shopping basket for URL's to download later" (while sleeping ?), so the one hour wasn't enough.
We won't remove the restriction, as the bandwidth thieves are worse than ever, but there is a way for you to recover a broken download anyway
