Hallo,

ich habe meinen Nachbarn Linux schmackhaft gemacht und wollte es jetzt neben XP installieren. Das System hat einen AMD Athlon 64 Processor 3000+ mit Nvidia Grafikkarte, 10 GB sind für root und 15 GB sind für /home vorgesehen.
Nachdem sich das System während der Installation das erste mal aufgehängt hatte habe ich den Arbeitsspeicher von 500 auf 1000 Mb erweitert da ich dachte es liegt daran. Die Rootpartition noch mal neu formatiert und neu installiert bin ich jetzt schon so weit gekommen, dass sich das System über das Internet aktualisiert. Dann stand wieder alles still, nur Caps lock und Scroll lock Lampen blinken. Und das mehrmals, es hängt immer wieder an einer anderen Stelle.
Die DVD habe ich überprüft, alles i. O. Das gleiche System habe ich bei mir auch aufgesetzt, mit ähnlicher Hardware.
Ich würde ja auf einen defekten Arbeitsspeicher tippen aber müsste XP da nicht auch ab und zu mal abstürzen?

Dieser Verdacht kommt bei mir auch auf. Teste es auf jeden Fall mal eine Nacht lang mit memtest durch.

Windows XP hat ein ganz anderes Speichermanagement als Linux.
Unter Linux gilt: nicht verwendeter Speicher ist verschwendeter Speicher. So wird möglichst viel des freien Speichers als Cache verwendet.
Windows XP hingegen verwendet nur was gerade von den Prozessen angefordert wird.

Ja werde ich mal machen. Da ich schon dran rumgefummelt habe und bei XP alles läuft sieht es jetzt bloß wieder aus aus als hätte ich was kaputt gemacht... :o
Läuft die 11.1 auch mit 500 Mb?

Mit Biegen und Brechen, ein paar Klimmzügen und Handständen habe ich openSUSE 11.0 sogar mal mit 64 MB RAM betrieben. Mit noch etwas mehr Mühe ginge sicher noch weniger... :D

Full ACK. Und spricht öfters für ACPI Probleme bzw. sonstige Chipsatz-Unverträglichkeiten. Kannst Du mal ein

Auch während der Installation kann man bei SUSE per Alt+f2, f3... auf
eine andere Konsole wechseln und einen lspci usw absetzen.

Mit den Parameter noacpi und acpi=off hab ich auch versucht zu starten, trotzdem hat sich das System nach ein paar Minuten wieder aufgehängt.

Leider kann ich aus Deinem lspci keinen "Verdächtigen" erkennen.
Hast Du irgendwelche USB/Firewire-Geräte an dem Rechner?

Ja, 2 USB Geräte sind angeschlossen. Einmal ein Epson Stylus DX 5000 und eine Dockingstation für ein Pocket-PC glaub ich.
Bin gerade von meinen Einsatz beim Nachbarn zurück. Den Arbeitsspeicher und die Festplatte kann ich jetzt wohl ausschließen als Fehlerquelle.
Ich habe eine 2. Platte eingebaut und die andere abgetrennt, Opensuse installiert und es lief schon eine Weile und ich dachte alles ist gut da hing sich das System wieder auf mit blinkenden LEDs.

... Läuft die 11.1 auch mit 500 Mb?
SuSE 10.0 konnte ich damals auf meinem älteren Zweitrechner, ein F&S 1,4GHz mit 128 MB-RAM nur über den Kommandozeilen-Yast installieren. Bei der normalen grafischen Installation gab es einfach einen Blackout, ohne jede Meldung.

Im Betrieb war das Linux-System letztlich instabil. Solange wie man nur einen Browser aufhatte etc. ging es halbwegs, aber wehe man machte auch noch OpenOffice auf. Ich kopiere z. B. mache Zeitungsartikel und füge sie in die jeweilige Textverarbeitung ein, unter Linux eben OO. Das war hier einfach tödlich! Zwei Versuche, zwei totale Aufhänger! Es half wirklich nur noch den Stecker ziehen.
Auf der ersten HD war da Win xp home drauf, und das lief auch nicht besonders toll, aber immer noch besser. Hatte man aber zu viel auf gab es auch Aufhänger, aber unter Win kann man die über den Taskmanager abschießen, bei Linux reagierte keine Taste mehr.

Kurze Rede langer Sinn, oder umgekehrt, 500MB-RAM für SuSE 11.1 könnten eventuell die gleichen Reaktionen hervorrufen wie oben geschildert. - Meiner Ansicht nach ist das eindeutig zu wenig.

Zwischendurch habe ich auch mal die Live- CD probiert, damit kam es zum gleichen Absturz.
Vielleicht habt Ihr ja noch eine Idee woran es liegen könnte.

Hmm, und wie mach ich das? In meinen Bootmenü steht der mit drin, bei meinen Nachbarn nicht. Muss ich da neu installieren?
Heute habe ich noch mal die Live-CD runtergeladen und gestartet. Auch da hing sich das System auf. Mehrmals, auch als es schon eine Weile lief.

Wenn WIN-XP auch nicht sauber rennt, vermute ich mal ein Hardware-Problem.
Ich habe schon Debian Etch mit grafischer Oberfläche mit 64MB betrieben.
War zwar - wegen Paging grottenlangsam bei OO usw - aber es hat sich
nie !!! aufgeängt - man mußte halt Geduld haben. 500MB für Suse sollten eigentlich
ausreichen - mach mal ein free in der Konsole, wenn OO gestartet ist, da sieht man
mal, wies RAM-mäßig aussieht. Memtest ist auch immer ein guter Kanditat.
Hast du mal probiert, per ssh oder Telnet auf die Kiste zu kommen, so sie sich
aufgehängt hat. Wenn das noch geht, ist es eher ein Problem von X, bez dem
Grafik-Treiber. Ich hatte es schon, daß auch alt+f1,2,3 usw nicht mehr fruchteten,
um auf eine Konsole zu kommen - aber per ssh gings dann doch und ein
kill -9 pid des X-Servers führte problemlos zur "Wiederbelebung".
