Debian oder Knoppix?

Hi!

Nachdem ich jahrelang mit RedHat/Fedora unterwegs war, überlege ich mir mal den Wechsel zu Debian. Da ja auch Knoppix ein Debian Derivat ist, wollte ich euch fragen, was eurer Meinung nach vernünftiger ist: Soll ich ein reines Debian installieren, oder die Knoppix-DVD 5.01 installieren und danach damit weiterarbeite. Könnt ihr mir bitte die Vorteile bzw. Nachteile beider Installationsvarianten erläutern? Bin ich mit der Knoppix-Installation eingeschränkt?

Wie sieht es denn bei Knoppix mit Paketen aus? Kann man da einfach einen Debian-SID Mirror nehmen?

Ich würde dir zu Ubuntu raten, das ist um einiges Benutzerfreundlicher als Debian und hat im Gegensatz zu Knoppix so gut wie alle Pakete in den Repos. Ansonsten würde ich zu einem reinen Debian raten, aber zur unstable Variante, da bald Debian 4.0 raus kommt, und das "unstable" im jetzigen Stadium schon ziemlich stabil sein dürfte, die Stable ist uralt.

Das ist die sources.list von Knoppix 5.0, sieht also eher nach "Mischmasch" Sarge/Etch/Sid aus. 5.0.1 habe ich gerade nicht "griffbereit".

Allerdings sollte doch ein Dist-Upgrade (wenn ich die Debian-Philosophie richtig verstanden habe) auf Etch oder Sid kein Problem sein, zumindest prinzipiell.

Wer allerdings ein "fertiges" Debian auf der Platte haben will, sollte vielleicht doch auf das "Original" zurückgreifen. (Und eine Knoppix-CD/DVD für alle Notfälle trotzdem griffbereit haben!)

Als Desktop oder Server?

Danke mal für eure Hinweise. Ich brauche es lediglich für Desktop und Multimedia, sprich, MP3 und Filme und DVDs ansehen können.

Ich rate zu Kanotix, ein ursprünglicher Knoppix-Ableger, der aber in der Hardware-Erkennung besser ist. Bei Hardwar-Installation erhältst du ein lupenreines Debian Sid.

Vor allem gibt es eine sehr rege Community mit Forum, Wiki usw. unter www.kanotix.com.
