Morgantown, WV; October 25, 2004: MEPIS LLC has released SimplyMEPIS 2004.04. This latest CD adds international support for Swedish to the previous support for British, French, German, Italian, and Spanish. Other CD improvements include an updated GRUB bootloader for better hardware compatibility and a more permissive Failsafe boot configuration.

The JVM has been updated to work better with the Mozilla broswer engine; kphone has been preinstalled for the convenience of VOIP phone service users; and configuration problems were resolved to enable remote printing in CUPS and LPD.

SimplyMEPIS is a complete desktop Linux that fetures the KDE 3.2.3 desktop, OpenOffice 1.1.2, Mozilla 1.7.2, GIMP2, Xine, and many other applications to give the desktop user everything needed to quickly become productive in the SimplyMEPIS desktop Linux environment.

Ich selbst kann dem bis jetzt nur beipflichten, habe MEPIS allerdings bislang nur als Live CD benutzt, nicht installiert.

Folgende Kritikpunkte: gaim und xchat fehlen, stattdessen chatZilla (!) und kopete (na gut, das ist Ansichtssache); "networking start eth0" laeuft anscheinend nicht mit kernel 2.6.7 -> kein Internet via ethernet -> muss kernel 2.4.26 benutzen, dann geht's. Beide Kernel koennen direkt vom Bootmenue (GRUB) gestartet werden.

Der grosse Pluspunkt ist aber, dass Debian-Repositories benutzt werden koennen, d.h. alle Software des Debian-Projekts laeuft auch auf MEPIS, inklusive z.B. GNOME.

Die Installation von MEPIS soll einfacher sein als die von Windows.

Was live-CDs anbetrifft, bleibt Knoppix Koenig.
